Darkened

The poems included in this collection appeared in the world only in 1991, twenty years after the death of the author, although some of them were published as early as 1968 in a small anthology. It resembles a handwritten convolute found in Celan’s work office at the Great Normal School, written between the cruel and early 1966 in the Psychiatric University Hospital of St. Annie. In this manner, chronologically, the stench falls on the final phase of the work on the collection of “Fibres of the Sun”, with which there are many thematic parallels. Two leitmotifs dominate here – the motive of loss of light and the motive of suffering. Behind its figurative system of stench lies until Celan’s “atonal” lyrics.
