  • As one of the founders of science fiction, H. G. Wells gave us a vision of the future that has had a significant impact on the modern world. His first novel, The Time Machine, which brought him immediate success, was followed by other books and with them further recognition. We were honored to create a new design based on the handwritten text of The Time Machine to honor Welles's extraordinary life and work.

If you've ever flown on an airplane, watched satellite television, feared a possible alien invasion, or used the Internet, know that all these things and ideas were born in the imagination of H.G. George Wells (1866-1946). Wells, who worked prolifically in a range of genres, is not only one of the founders of science fiction, but also a futurist whose vision of the future has had a great influence on the modern world.

Herbert Wells was born in the English county of Kent, where his parents ran a small shop. Having received his first education in biology, he became interested in scientific ethics. Wells's writing career began with short humorous articles. However, his first novel, The Time Machine (1895), brought him dizzying success, making Wells the main science fiction writer of the turn of the century. We owe the popularity of the idea of time travel and the very expression “time machine” to this work, which still finds many readers.

This novel was followed by other works that became classics of the genre, including The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897) and The War of the Worlds (1898). Wells's later works have a political and didactic bent. For example, in “Essays on History,” published in 1920, the writer expressed his social views and judgments about the history of mankind. A constant focus on the future helped Wells find new ways of self-expression. In particular, he worked on Hollywood films and the famous radio play by Orson Welles “War of the Worlds,” which seemed even too realistic to listeners.

Over the years of his fruitful work, H. G. Wells was nominated four times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Wells is rightfully considered one of the founders of the science fiction genre, and his influence on speculative fiction and futurism is obvious. It is characteristic that in Wells's work fantasies are always presented as something feasible - “a separate assumption of the extraordinary” never developed into fairy tales or fantasy.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of H. G. Wells' death, we pay tribute to his talent by expanding the Paperblanks collection with a handwritten cover of The Time Machine.
