The mysterious patient, who has no name, registered under the number of the NKVD, which is carefully guarded by the secret department, turns out to be... a boy of ten or twelve years old.

After this, the more or less settled life of Zinaida Krestovskaya will move forward. She witnesses the terrible and absurd deaths of people who were in some way connected with a strange patient, a corpse is thrown into her room, and she herself is threatened.
