Description

It was King's third published novel and his first hardcover bestseller. According to the main storyline, a former teacher takes a job as a caretaker and moves his family to the Overlook Mountain Hotel for the winter. Isolated from the outside world, Jack Torrance, a former alcoholic, is influenced by the dark essence of the hotel and the ghosts that inhabit its walls.

Plot:

Young teacher Jack Torrance gets a job at the Overlook Mountain Hotel as a watchman for the winter and by the end of autumn he moves there with his family: his wife Wendy and five-year-old son Denny. The luxury hotel has a bad reputation: strange and creepy events are constantly happening there. Denny is a clairvoyant and telepath. Jack Torrance is a former teacher and aspiring writer; after his marriage, his character deteriorated, he began to drink and become promiscuous. He accidentally broke his son's arm and severely beat one of his students for slashing his car tires. He needs this job to calm down, write his play, pass the time until his friend gets him back to school. Before him, the hotel was guarded by a certain Delbert Grady, who killed his entire family.

During the departure of the hotel staff, Denny met the chef - an elderly black giant, Dick Halloran, who told the boy that he “shines” like no one else, that is, he can read people’s thoughts, see events that happened in the past or will happen in the future. His mother “also shines a little, a little bit.” Halloran says that certain events, especially negative ones, can leave a mark that is felt by people who have the ability to “shine.” He says that the hotel is a dangerous place and categorically forbids the boy to enter room 217. Dick asks that in case of danger, immediately call him for help through a mental connection. The Torrance family remains in a huge building. Strange things begin to happen. Certain details of the situation come to life - a fire hose or bushes trimmed in the shape of animals . Denny begins to see the true face of the hotel, which is inhabited by ghosts of past years. Denny enters room 217 and sees a resurrected woman there, who at one time died from an overdose of sleeping pills in the bathroom of this room, who attacks him.
