Together with other Italian families such as the Visconti and Sforza of Milan, they inspired the birth of the Italian Renaissance. They had a major influence on the growth of the Italian Renaissance through their patronage of the arts and humanism. They paid artists commissions for large works of art. Medici patronage had a huge impact on the Renaissance, allowing artists to focus on their work without worrying about money. A significant amount of the art and architecture created in Florence at the beginning of the Renaissance belonged to the Medici. At first they supported the artist Masaccio and helped pay the architect Brunelleschi to restore the Basilica of San Lorenzo. Other famous artists supported by the Medici include Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello and Leonardo da Vinci. The Medici also supported science: the famous scientist Galileo Galilei, who also served as a tutor for the Medici children. The paths of Visconti and the Medici are very similar as philanthropists. Many of Visconti's ideas and collections come from the history of Florence. It was only a matter of time before Visconti dedicated one of his collections to the Medici family. In 2018, Visconti added a Medici Gold version to the collection with a metallic rose gold finish. The nib is made of 23K palladium
