Description
Oregano is most often associated with Italy, but this spice has long left the Mediterranean cuisine and is now found in the spice set of every housewife. The plant belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It is sometimes called "wild marjoram" or "oregano." As a seasoning, the oregano plant has a distinct aroma and a specific warm and pungent taste. The leaves are used in cooking, both fresh and dried.
Essential oils of the plant are often used in medicine. They claim that it has a calming effect and has a positive effect on the digestion and nervous system. In folk medicine, there are many recipes for products with oregano that help in the fight against allergic dermatitis, hypertension and neuroses. Due to its calming properties, the spice is often used to relieve headaches.
How is oregano used?
Not only Italians actively use oregano when preparing delicious national dishes. Spices and herbs containing this plant are found in France and Belgium, where it is added to champignons; in the Caucasus, it is a mandatory ingredient in the marinade for canning cucumbers or mushrooms. Spice is also added to
- drinks - tea, kvass and some alcoholic beverages;
- soups (except chicken broth)
- fried, stewed and boiled meat dishes;
- mushrooms and fish;
- salty baked goods - egg pies, pizzas or what;
- sauces and gravy (especially meat)
- salad dressings.
The price of oregano is quite low, especially when purchased in bulk, so every housewife has the opportunity to make her affairs a little more fragrant and give them interesting notes. However, it should be borne in mind that the spice has a fairly pronounced taste. When using it, there should be moderation, because in large quantities it can overshadow the dish.
