Description
Copper sulfate - transparent hygroscopic crystals of triclinic shape, bright blue color. It is a blue pentahydrate of copper(II) sulfate. It is highly soluble in water, concentrated solutions of hydrochloric acid, and diluted alcohol; it is poorly soluble in ethanol. In air it gradually erodes (loses water of crystallization). Has a sickening metallic taste.
Density: 2.284 g/cm?. Melting point: 1100° C.
In nature, copper sulfate can be found in the form of minerals: chalcokyanite, chalcanthite, butite, etc.
In industry, copper sulfate is obtained by dissolving copper in heated dilute sulfuric acid acid when blowing air or as a by-product of electrolytic refining of copper.
Chemical formula: CuSO4•5H2O.
This is the oldest and most effective fungicide, which is intended for spraying ornamental fruit and berry trees and shrubs against scab, moniliosis, anthracnose and other diseases in early spring before bud break, as well as for disinfecting wounds in fruit trees. Seeds are also treated in solutions of copper sulfate before sowing to destroy mold spores on the seeds. Can be used as a rabbit repellent.
Copper sulfate has also achieved great success in construction, preventing the rotting of wooden structures. It removes rust stains well from the surface after leaks and the release of salts on concrete surfaces.
It is also used for ore enrichment during flotation, in the production of double-sided printed circuit boards, and in the processes of galvanic and chemical copper plating.
In the food industry, copper sulfate (food additive E519), a preservative and emulsifier, is used as a paint fixative.
It is used in electroplating when coating metal products with copper.
