“The Master and Margarita” is a novel by Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov, work on which began in the late 1920s and continued until the death of the writer. The novel is an unfinished work; editing and bringing together the draft notes was carried out after the death of her husband by the writer’s widow, Elena Sergeevna. The first version of the novel, which had the titles “The Engineer’s Hoof”, “The Black Magician” and others, was destroyed by Bulgakov in 1930. In subsequent editions, the author of the novel about Pontius Pilate and his beloved appeared among the heroes of the work. The final title, “The Master and Margarita,” took shape in 1937.


The action of the novel begins on one of the May days, when two Moscow writers - the chairman of the board of MASSOLIT, Mikhail Aleksandrovich Berlioz and the poet Ivan Bezdomny - while walking on the Patriarch's Ponds, meet a stranger who looks like a foreigner. He gets involved in a conversation about Jesus Christ, talks about his stay on the balcony of the procurator of Judea, Pontius Pilate, and predicts that Berlioz’s head will be cut off by a “Russian woman, a Komsomol member.” Writers do not know that before them is Woland - the devil, who arrived in the Soviet capital with his retinue: Fagot-Korovyov, Azazello, the cat Behemoth and the maid Gella...
