“Flowers of Darkness” is the second, after “Catherine”, novel by the famous Israeli writer Aharon Appelfeld, published in Ukrainian translation. The events of the novel unfold in Chernivtsi and its surroundings against the backdrop of the Holocaust. There are two main characters: the Jewish boy Hugo and the Ukrainian prostitute Maryana. Quite simple at the plot level, this novel is able to push the reader to far from simple reflections about the nature of good and evil, about first and last love, about loyalty to a given word and about the price that, in times of greatest darkness, one has to pay for trying to save at least one stranger life.
