Description

Maxim Karlovich Kantor (people in 1957) is a famous Russian and now European artist and writer, author of many paintings, novels, essays, and journalistic articles. The novel Red Light was first published in 2013; its second, revised edition is published in Russian for the first time. Solomon Richter, a professor of philosophy, dies in an ordinary Moscow regional hospital. He listens to conversations between patients, visitors, and orderlies about the war in Ukraine, remembers his long life, and talks about human values. Tukhachevsky, Gamarnik, W. Churchill, Stalin, Hitler, the publisher of Hitler’s books, Putin, Russian oppositionists, Ukrainian politicians, a dynasty of NKVD-KGB-FSB investigators pass through the pages of the book. . . We see terrible scenes of the battle of Rzhev in World War II, we learn the truth about the civil war in Spain, the whole history of Europe appears before us through the history of three generations - people of different social strata: a soldier, a philosopher, a security officer, a thief. The author himself says about the book: “The novel is structured in terzas: a bunch of three chapters is constantly repeated, the first of which is about modernity, the second is about the world war, shown through the destinies of Soviet people, the third is World War II and modernity through the eyes of a Hitler official. And each "The terza rhymes with the next. These three lines intersect constantly, the characters move from one narrative to another. The terza structure runs through the entire novel, and these cross-generational rhymes connect all the chapters."
