Description
Alexander Ilchenko (1909-1994) - Ukrainian writer, playwright, whose name, unfortunately, is little known to the modern reader, although he is the author of works that in his Over time, many were translated into different languages, for example, stories about T. G. Shevchenko “Petersburg Autumn”, V. Chkalov “An Ordinary Guy”. And yet the title of Ilchenko’s main novel is on everyone’s lips today.
“There is no translation for the Cossack family, or Mamai and Someone Else” - that’s the name of this book. The events in the novel take place after the death of Bogdan Khmelnitsky. The author talks about the adventures of the Cossack Mamai - a wandering Cossack, a warrior and a slacker, a joke and a philosopher, a fearless crafty and even... a sorcerer who can call on magical powers for help, escaping from danger. Ilchenko once said: “When in difficult times people do not cry, but laugh, they are stronger against any enemy.” This is what his epic novel is about, which in all respects falls under the definition of “masterpiece” and critics put it on a par with the works of Cervantes “Don Quixote” and Rabelais “Gargantua and Pantagruel”.
