Colombia is known throughout the world as the largest supplier of high quality washed Arabica beans.
The country is dominated by the Cordillera mountains, thereby creating a favorable terrain for growing Arabica trees, which are cultivated mainly in the highlands. Medellin is grown in the Colombian department of Antioquia. The largest coffee plantations in Colombia are located here. The city of Medellin is the capital of the department. Coffee from this region is considered the best in all of Colombia. Most Colombian coffee is grown in small farms on plantations of about 5 hectares at an altitude of 1000 to 2000 meters above sea level. Each stage of production from harvesting, washing and drying in the sun is carried out under the personal supervision of farmers and their families. Almost all farmers are united in cooperatives, which are controlled by the National Federation of Coffee Producers of Colombia (FNC - Federacion Nacional de Cafeteros).
The symbol of "Cafe de Colombia" is a triangle depicting farmer Juan Valdez, who transports bags of coffee on a donkey. This phenomenon is very common in Colombia and can indeed be observed very often in this area. Good old donkeys and horses help harvest crops due to the fact that it is impossible to use machinery at such altitude differences.
Coffee is an important part of Colombian culture and, indeed, the pride of the locals. Not a single visitor to the coffee plantations leaves this area without drinking a cup of Tinto and asking the owner: “Is it true that Colombia produces the best coffee in the world?”
