INCLUDES: Making Of A Mountain - Vagrants & Energy: A Collection Of Recordings By The Two Bands That Spawned Mountain.
CD1 consists of 14 tracks recorded by the Vagrants, Long Island band formed by Leslie West and his brother Larry. This band produced 6 singles, last two of which were produced by Felix Pappalardi, and all these A and B sides are included here. Stylistically they are quite varied, garage soul/rock hybrid, and a couple of these tracks have been compliled on various Nuggests type collections. There are certainly hints at the Mountain sound on a couple of tracks, indeed their last single, Beside the Sea was played by Mountain at Woodstock. There is a final Vagrants track here, live version of Satisfaction which lasts for 12 minutes, and features some fabulous guitar playing in an arrangment that owes a little to contemporaries such as Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly.
Finally to complete CD1 are 6 Mountain songs from the of Climbing album. There is no information regarding when these were recorded, but they are studio demos, fully mixed, but lacking vocals, and are taken from an acetate or demo disk at a guess, complete with crackles! Very interesting, how they came to be released here.
CD 2 of consists of the only known recordings of Corkys Canadian band, Energy. They too were a professional band and indeed recorded a studio album, again produced by Felix, but this was not released at the time as Corky joined Mountain and the tapes have since disappeared. Instead we have a cassette recording from one of their last gigs before splitting in 1969. Recording quality is not bad considering, but the material, which is keyboard dominated and soul influenced, seems a bit ordinary. There is an early version of Missippi Queen, which only really has the title in common with Mountains song, and Who am I..., another song performed at Woodstock and which was re-written as Yasgurs Farm. (which is a bit curious as Corky wasnt in the band at Woodstack! Presumably Felix borrowed it from Energy!).
Finally there is a 12 minute bass solo by Felix!! This sounds like it was recorded at rehearsals and must date from later as it includes snippets of Nantucket Sleighride.
Its a well put together package with some interesting inteviews but there is a lack of detail regarding the tracks.
So, in conclusion, CD1 is well worth hearing, CD2 less so, but overall, for a REAL FAN, itsa MUST BUY.
