Description

Cloves are spices that extract the unbloomed buds of the clove tree of the myrtle family. Typically harvested from plants that are six years old. The buds are dried in the sun until a specific crackling sound appears when they are crushed.

It got its name due to the fact that these buds resemble nails with caps. The Latin name of the plant is Syzygium aromaticum and it grows anywhere with a fairly humid and warm climate, therefore it is found in Africa, South America, Indonesia and India.

The spice contains vitamins A, B, C, E, K, essential oils, tannins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, glycosites, lipids and many useful minerals. It is used in cooking, cosmetology and folk medicine.

Using spices in the kitchen

Cloves have a burning and tart taste and a simply incredible deep aroma. This allows you to give each dish a unique taste. It is an important component of seasoning for mulled wine; in addition, it is added to:

  • meat and fish dishes;
  • cough;
  • broths;
  • compotes;
  • wine and vodka drinks;
  • marinades and sauces;
  • jam, preserves and canned berries;
  • canned mushrooms;
  • a range of bakery products.

The spice should be used very carefully, because cloves have a very full and deep aroma that can easily overshadow the taste of the dish.

Spice is often used by people who want to lose weight, because it promotes this process thanks to:

  • a special taste that will add piquancy to even the most bland dish;
  • diaphoretic properties;
  • stimulating the secretion of gastric juice;
  • improving body tone;
  • ability to prevent bloating and diarrhea.

Interestingly, cloves have repellent properties and can repel mosquitoes, moths and other insects.
