Description

In cooking, asafoetida is usually used in small quantities to add flavor to salty, spicy dishes. It enhances digestion so much that with its help you can, as they say in India, digest nails. It is necessarily added to complex dishes, such as legumes and rice. In addition to taste, asafoetida has a number of medicinal properties, such as improving the microflora of the gastrointestinal tract, eliminating intestinal gases, colic, as well as pain and spasms in the body. Asafoetida has garlic -onion taste and smell, therefore it successfully replaces these spices in dishes. It can be added to appetizers, soups, vegetable dishes and side dishes, salads, in general, anywhere you would add onions or garlic. Asafoetida enhances digestion so much that in India they say that even nails can be digested with its help. Therefore, it must be added to difficult-to-digest dishes, such as legumes. It also improves appetite, helps with belching, eliminates gases and improves body tone. Typically, no more than a quarter teaspoon of asafoetida powder per serving of food is sufficient. It should be added at the end of cooking to preserve its flavor as much as possible. In India, pure asafoetida in resin is first dissolved in hot water (this produces white “asafetida milk”, which Hindus call “hing ki doodh”), and then it is added to the dish also at the end of cooking. It is enough to take pure resin on the tip of a knife for one serving. If you put too much of it, an unpleasant bitterness will appear. If you are preparing masala (spices fried in oil) to season the finished dish, then you can fry asafoetida along with the other spices. You should not add asafoetida at the beginning of cooking, otherwise it will lose its essential oils and will not be felt in the dish. For sore throat, mix a pinch of asafoetida and 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric with a glass of warm water and gargle with this solution. The antiseptic and analgesic properties of these spices will help in quick recovery. If you add asafoetida to water and drink in small sips, it will immediately clear your voice. It is also good for incipient cataracts in the form of an ointment with honey. Resin mixed with olive oil can be applied to the site of a bite from poisonous insects or a rabid dog, as it protects against the effects of poisons. Inhaling the smell of resin prevents attacks of hysteria. For children suffering from mental disorders, an enema of 1/2 tbsp. water and a pinch of asafoetida will have a calming effect. To relieve toothache, dissolve a pinch of asafoetida in 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice, heat it a little and apply a tampon soaked in this solution to the painful tooth. If you mix asafoetida with pomegranate juice and drink it, it will help with muscle tears and nerve pain. This spice is a very powerful digestive stimulant. It has strong antimicrobial and bactericidal properties and removes parasitic tapeworms from the gastrointestinal tract. Asafoetida is also used in cases of threatened miscarriage, infertility, leucorrhoea, in the postpartum period, and also to increase potency. Contraindications: The spice should not be abused at high temperatures, pregnancy, high acidity, or rash.
